EPSC Award 2010

EPSC Director of Centre Christian Jochum
Presenting the Award to Dr. Horowitz

The EPSC Award for 2010 was presented at the 13th International Symposium on Loss Prevention and Safety Promotion in the Process Industries. This years winner was the U.S. Chemical Safety Board which has been recognised for its excellent safety video series. The award is given to acknowledge progress toward a less-hazardous Europe and is made to an individual or team which has considerably advanced the theory or practice of process safety.

Representing the CSB to accept the award was the organisation's director, Dr. Daniel Horowitz, who oversees the production of the videos. Dr. Horowitz said about the award, “The EPSC Award is an exciting acknowledgement of our work in producing 17 safety videos since our first effort in 2005. We have distributed over 100,000 DVD sets of our videos around the world, and they have been viewed millions of times online. We have received thousands of messages praising the videos – from labour leaders, workers, safety training managers, company executives, trade associations, and other stakeholders across many industries. It is extremely rewarding to be cited by an organisation representing all the major chemical process players in Europe, who state the videos are helping to advance the practice of process safety.”

Dr. Horowitz also paid tribute to the late Carolyn Merritt, Chair of CSB who possessed the vision to initiate the CSB video series in the wake of the BP Texas City incident. There are now many in the series, production of which videos amounts to only 3-4% of the CSB budget but which command the majority of traffic to the CSB website.

EPSC believes that the outstanding effort of the CSB to produce clearly understandable and accessable safety videos is a great aid towards global improvement of process safety. They communicate the series of causes that lead to an accident, making clear the role that contributing factors play in allowing these unfortunate incidents to occur. It is an excellent information sharing tool to promote learning from unfortunate incidents.
