Message from the Board The most graphic achievement for EPSC in recent years has been organising the production of a process safety presentation film. Starting in 2008 EPSC has been working on the production of an educational and training package which is designed to foster commitment to major accident safety at senior management levels within the high hazards sector. This is meeting a need which was identified by EPSC members and is amplified in the Baker Panel report. Together with the EFCE Loss Prevention working party we developed a film script which underscores the moral and economic necessity of process safety. With most of the funds raised through our generous sponsors, EPSC completed shooting of Process Safety Pays towards the end of 2009 and production of the DVD for public availability began in early 2010.
Other recent EPSC activities have included our public workshops, An Audience with Andrew Hopkins and Design & Siting of Facilities. The first was a follow up to an earlier EPSC conference on Learning from Accidents and featured the EPSC Award 2008 winner who presented thought provoking comment on the twin contrasting approaches to safety management, namely risk management and rule compliance. The second workshop was aimed to give a mainly European audience a preview of API752, the new standard on the design and siting of permanent structures in hazardous areas. During our Autumn TSC meeting we combined the themes of both events in a workshop which explored member approaches to risk management in the design and siting of buildings in hazardous areas.
Further afield EPSC has an ongoing drive to further the relations to bodies with comparable activities in the field of process safety. A dialogue with CCPS led to a common commitment to common projects if feasible. In November 2009, EPSC Chairman Klaus-Juergen Niemitz had the chance to present to an EFCE Loss Prevention Working Party meeting in Krakow. EFCE Chair George Suter gave a presentation in return as part of a workshop held on April 2010 on EPSC Strategic Relationship with other Bodies which also includes contributions from the likes of DECHEMA, the event hosts, as well as Cefic, IChemE, EU-OSHA and UNEP. The options for efficient collaborations have to be evaluated carefully. Within Europe the need for closer collaboration on the small but important area of process safety is self evident.
