Health & Safety Chair to lead new IChemE safety centre
02/12/2009
Hackitt, a member of IChemE’s Council and a Chartered Chemical Engineer, assumed the post at the Institution’s Hazards XXI conference in Manchester this week where the centre was officially launched. She will lead a team of safety experts and provide technical guidance and support across all aspects of the Institution’s safety services and portfolio.Hackitt says she is pleased and honoured to lead the centre: “We face a real challenge to ensure that process safety is embedded as a core skill within our profession.”
The safety centre brings together IChemE’s existing publications, training services and specialist subject groups and also set safety strategy in line with the Institution’s overall plan.
Justin Blades, IChemE marketing director says: “I am thrilled that someone of Judith’s calibre has agreed to take on the role and ensure that IChemE process safety activities go from strength to strength.“
IChemE CEO, Dr David Brown says that Hackitt is well placed to lead the new group: “Our safety centre incorporates a wide range of services and professional groups. It’s vital that the safety centre steering group is led by somebody with a multi-sector, multi-faceted understanding of safety. Judith’s chemical engineering background and safety expertise makes her the ideal candidate.”
Over 400 process safety experts attended the four-day conference at the Manchester Conference Centre this week. Speakers included John Bresland, Chairman and CEO of the US Chemical Safety Board, Sam Mannan, from the Mary Kay O’Connor Process Safety Centre in Texas, US and safety guru Trevor Kletz OBE.
