TWG2 Meeting Prompts Discussion on Ageing Assets

22/07/2010
A French national plan on safety of ageing equipment has been raised for discussion at a meeting of Technical Working Group 2 in Brighton.

The plan aims to examine safety issues of degradation of equipment by exposure to its environment. Corrosion, wear, and other long term damage to equipment become a greater concern as assets are left in service for long periods.

This plan has prompted a question applicable to Europe as a whole of whether special attention to ageing equipment is justified separate to normal maintenance and replacement activities. Inspection and assessment of the condition of equipment is expected where corrosion or other wear is relatively rapid. Are slower forms of degradation a sufficiently different problem to be treated seperately? This relates in particular to damage caused by exposure to non-hazardous environments such as outside air and weather as well as to production substances.

There are examples of incidents to be found where ageing of equipment has been a contributing factor through a variety of mechanisms. These include direct weakening of containing walls from within or from outside, as well as failure of physical supporting structures due to corrosion, and thermal expansion damage.
